Tips for Yoga Students
- Be on time for your class and introduce yourself to the teacher 5 to 10 minutes early if you are attending a class for the first time.
- Avoid having a meal before doing yoga – you will enjoy the stretching and movement more if you have not eaten for a few hours before a class.
- Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Yoga is noncompetitive and it is important to go at your own pace.
- Listen to your body. Stretching is good, pain is not, so set reasonable goals taking into account your current physical condition, degree of flexibility and age.
- Keep mind and body relaxed and keep your attention on your breath and the yoga movements.
- Ask questions of the teacher either before or after class – he or she will be happy to discuss particular issues with you.
- Most people start to experience positive physical and mental changes after 6-8 weeks of doing yoga. Those who come to two classes a week and do some personal practice at home will notice the benefits sooner.
- Wear clothing that is comfortable that you can stretch in and move easily.
