Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What exactly are yoga poses or postures?

A: Yoga postures, or “asanas”, are the physical positions that coordinate breath with movement. They stretch and strengthen different parts of the body.

Q: What are some of the benefits of doing yoga?

A: Yoga postures and sequences offer different benefits depending on the movement created. For instance, forward bends, twists and inversions stimulate the entire internal system, including the lymphatic system, and boost the immune system. Other poses stimulate, calm and energize, while others build stamina or concentration, promote sleep, alleviate PMS, or soothe digestion.

Q: How many times per week should I practise?

A: Even if you only practice for one hour a week, you will experience the benefits of yoga. If you can do more than that, you will certainly experience more benefits. I suggest starting with one or two times a week, for an hour and a half each time.

Q: I'm not flexible - can I do yoga?

A: Yes! You are a perfect candidate for yoga. Many people think that they need to be flexible to begin yoga, but that's a little bit like thinking that you need to be able to play tennis in order to take tennis lessons. Come as you are and you will find that yoga practice will help you become more flexible.

This newfound agility will be balanced by strength, coordination, and enhanced cardiovascular health, as well as a sense of physical confidence and overall well-being.

Q: Do I need to be fit to come to yoga?

A: No! Yoga is fine for anyone, but if you have had recent surgery or suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes or are pregnant you should discuss your medical situation with a doctor before attending a class.

Q: Shall I bring anything with me to yoga?

A: If you have your own mat please bring it along. You may also be glad of a small cushion to sit on and in winter it is useful to have a light weight blanket to use during relaxation. Some students bring a small water bottle, but it is not recommended that you should drink large amounts of water during the class.
